Vrat Recipe: Sabudana Khichdi (Sago Khichdi)

Fasting habit not only gives you a feeling of a connection to God but also give your body a detox day. That is why fasting is not only spiritually uplifting but also has various health benefits. On the day of fast, people usually avoid heavy food and stick themselves to simple and easily digestible foods. Observing a fast gives you an opportunity to stick to your roots and hence, keeping your body, mind and soul in maximum peace. There are so many options of foods when it comes to eat during fasting. One of the most common food which people eat during any type of fasting is Sago or Sabudana and Sabudana Khichdi is a very common recipe which people opt for. This is a very easy and simple dish to make.

Recipe:

Sago or Sabudana is a high source of Carbohydrates. It is full of starch, that is why; it will give you the much needed energy during your fasting. To prepare Sabudana Khichdi, you need following ingredients:

Ingredients:

Sabudana/Sago: 1 cup

Roasted Peanuts: 1/4 cup

Ghee: 2 tbsp

Cumin Seeds/Jeera: 1/4 tsp

Red Chilli (Whole): 2-3

Curry Leaves: 3-4

Green Chilli (Finely Chopped): 2

Red Chilli Powder: 1/2 tsp

white Rock Salt/Sendha Namak: 1 tsp or to taste

Lemon Juice: 1 tbsp

Green Coriander Leaves (Finely Chopped): 1 tsp

Method:

  1. Wash sabudana till you see the clear water and then soak it in water for 30-40 minutes.

  2. Drain the water and then spread it over a cloth to get dry, otherwise the sabudana will stick together in lumps while cooking.

  3. Now heat ghee in a skillet and put jeera, whole red chillies and curry leaves. Stirr for a minute.

  4. Now add, sabudana, roasted peanuts, chilli powder and white rock salt/sendha namak. Mix well and cook for about 3- minutes or until the sabudana is cooked.

  5. Turn off the stove and let it cool down to room temperature.

  6. Once the temperature is normal, add lemon juice and mix well again.

  7. Garnish with finely chopped coriander leaves and green chillies.

Note: You can also put chopped green chillies in ghee while frying the jeera and whole red chillies.

This recipe is very easy to make and delicious to taste. Plus, it very well solve the purpose of a high-energy food required during fasting.
